Despicable Me Review

Knocked ooooooovaaaa!

This quote describes exactly how I felt after watching the film. I’d had no exposure to it at all other than remembering seeing the mini-yellow minion characters in an advert once or twice. To put it simply, I had no particular interest in checking it out at the cinema because I’d never actually heard anything about it.

I’m not usually one to check out these 3D cartoon films. I’d draw the line at Toy Story but even then I didn’t end up in line to watch the latest version of it earlier in the year. So off i went in search of an old pair of 3D glasses i’d bought before and made my way to the cinema.

First impressions were pretty mixed. I had no idea what was going on at first. It opens with a scene in Egypt. The audience follow a little boy playing away happily with his toy aeroplane. After wandering off from his parents he starts to walk over towards a repair tower. Presumably work is being done on the pyramids. It all takes a funny turn as is to be expected from these types of films. I won’t go ahead and spoil it other than it involves criminals.

Enter our main character of the film. Simply known as “Gru”. The world’s former number one Supervillain. From the outset we see an evil genius at work. He cuts traffic with his enormous rocket-like car. He skips queues by cunningly freezing everyone in front of him..genius.

Upon returning home to, what can only be described as, some sort of haunted house. He learns that he has been over shadowed by an up and coming Supervillain. This rival comes to be known as Vector. He’s stolen something far superior to anything Gru has ever stolen. From here on in it becomes Gru’s personal mission to steal nothing other than…the moon.

From here on in we’re treated to a battle of wits and mind. Gru needs to obtain a shrink ray to get his moon but after stealing it, it’s stolen off him straight away by Vector.

minions

Throughout the film we bare witness to these little lovable characters. Known as Minions. They work underground in Gru’s mansion and seem to adore him and all his schemes.

Some of the things they get up to throughout the film never failed to make me and everyone else watching laugh.

To make it clear how far some of the scenes go. We’re treated to three of them photocopying as they put it themselves “butt”. Really amusing to watch and probably the best part of the film overall. Halloween costume anyone?

girls

These three are the other main characters in the film. Three little orphan girls who take pride in delivering chocolates, cookies, you name it to whoever is willing to buy them. Margo, Edith and little Agnes, possibly another highlight of the film. Fans of Monsters Inc will surely adore her. She does bare a resemblance to Boo.

It wouldn’t be the film it is without these girls having an impact on our villain and so they do. Can they finally find the parent figure they’ve been looking for or will they suffer around all the evil. Again i’m not going to spoil it so be sure to check it out given the chance.

I’d give it a solid 4.5/5 (Especially for the minion interactions)
